Sorry people — forgot to put up fly friday last week, so here’s two installments!

Fishing Report 9/9/10

Its starting to really feel like Fall in Yellowstone Country!!!!

Firehole and Madison River: The Firehole is a starting to approach its fall peak. White millers are coming off and with the recent weather systems that have been coming we anticipate the arrival of Fall Baetis. When the temps reach the mid 60’s terrestrials are still fishing well. The Madison in the Park is starting to host fish from Hebgen Lake, so swinging big soft hackles or streamers isn’t a bad idea.

The Northeast Corner of the Park: We are seeing the emergence of Drake Mackrels and Fall Baetis on the Lamar, Soda Butte, and Slough. As always, when those bugs are around fish eat them. We are expecting to see some rain up there so after the next two days Slough maybe the best choice, as it stays the clearest. Again the Hopper, Beetles, and ants are not to be totally neglected.

Hebgen Lake: She might be just about down, but there still a chance for some guzzlers..gulpers, when the wind and weather cooperate.

Madison outside the Park: We are seeing the same trend occur here. Terrestrials when its warm, Baetis (Size 20 & 22) on the other end of the spectrum. There have also been some Heptagina emergence. A size 16 olive sparkle dun or flav cripple works as an imitation. Going under the surface with Baetis nymphs or midges has been catching trout, at least thats what I’m told.

Gallatin: It would be wise to stay up stream of Taylor’s fork. Fish attractors in the #14 or #16 range or Baetis.

Henry’s Fork:  Box Canyon has been nymphing well with Princes, and the Ranch is starting to see some Mahogany Duns.
